Ordinary professor of contemporary history at the University of Lausanne, specialized in media history, François Vallotton is the author of several contributions on cultural and intellectual history from a Swiss but also transnational perspective. His work embraces the history of the Swiss edition, the Swiss public television and radio as well as the mediatic culture in Switzerland and Europe.

Frédéric Clavert, holder of a PhD in Contemporary History, completed studies in political science and contemporary history in Strasbourg and Leeds.

His research focuses on three main areas: the history of economic and monetary organisation across the European continent in the 20th and 21st centuries, collective memory of the past in the age of big data, and the relationship between historians and their digital primary sources.

Solenn holds a PhD in Contemporary History, on educational policy during the 19th century, and is currently teaching digital history at the EPFL (2017-2018). Her research interests span historical data structuration, effects of historical archives digitization and interdisciplinary collaborations within digital research projects.

Within impresso and as a historian, Solenn participates in the discussion on how historians use newspapers in their research and which tools might be helpful.

Oleksandra Kunovska Mondoux, PhD

World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s

Oleksandra Kunovska Mondoux completed her Ph.D. in contemporary history at the University of Fribourg (Switzerland). Her doctoral thesis dealt with the representations of globalization, modernization and consumption in newspaper advertisements of Ukrainians, Jews, and Poles in interwar Lviv. During her doctoral research, she created a database of more than 40,000 advertisements in interwar Poland to examine the common features of daily life in a multi-ethnic city as well as the power of economic nationalism and trade wars. Oleksandra has experience in various academic milieus and international organisations. Her research interests include global, social, economic, gender, quantitative and visual history.

Within impresso, Oleksandra researches how gender and ethnic identities reveal consumption practices in newspaper advertisements of different geographic spaces and cultural traditions. She also examines how trade with Eastern Europe is perceived in Swiss newspapers and what marketing strategies Eastern European entrepreneurial businesses applied in order to conquer Swiss markets.

Christopher Morse, PhD

Christopher is a doctoral researcher in human-computer interaction at the University of Luxembourg C2DH. His work focuses on interaction design and user experience for institutions of cultural heritage with particular focus on virtual and augmented reality.

Within impresso, Christopher designs and tests mixed reality user interfaces and other novel interactions with the archive in order to support content retrieval and discoverability.

Clemens holds a MA in Philosophy, Computer Science and Political Science from LMU University of Munich and currently works as Research Advisor in the Directorate General of the Berlin State Library. He has more than 15 years experience working in Research & Development in various digital libraries, with a keen interest on OCR and Digital Humanities. Clemens is the coordinator of Europeana Newspapers and involved in a number of DH projects focusing on historical newspapers (see cneud.net for more).

Within impresso, Clemens contributes Europeana Newspapers data and knowledge exchange on OCR & NER for historical newspapers.

Benoît Seguin is an Independent Engineer specialized in the applications of Machine Learning with a specific expertise with applying technology to large data coming from the Cultural Heritage domain.

Within impresso, he develops a prototype for a visual search engine, that allows to search within the pictures and iconographic elements of the impresso collection and explore them by similarity.
